Passport Applications - Miss Willye A. Smith - 1918, 1920, and 1921

Miss Willye A. Smith, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Smith and Nancy Ellen Norris, was born at Hartford 7 August 1887.  Her first application states that she lives in Washington, DC and that she is employed by the Red Cross as a stenographer; the application is for permission to travel to the British Isles and France on behalf of the Red Cross.  Her second passport application, in 1920, states that she has lived in Paris since 1918, and she is employed by the Interallied Rhineland High Commission, American Department, as a stenographer, and that she temporarily lives in a hotel in Paris. The third application states that she remains employed by the Interallied Rhineland High Commission, American Department, but is now living in Coblenz, Germany.  The Inter-Allied Rhineland High Commission was created by the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919, to supervise the occupation of the Rhineland and "ensure, by any means, the security and satisfaction of all the needs of the Armies of Occupation". It came into being on 10 January 1920, when the treaty came into force. It was based in Coblenz.  The Commission lasted for 15 years.

Willye returned to Washington, DC in 1923 (age 35) and apparently never married; she died September 1976 in Washington.
