Kentucky Settlement Map 1750-1800
Fort Hartford is shown as number 48 on the map. This map was created by the Kentucky Historical Society.
The Pioneer river route frequently started at Fort Redstone on the Monongahela River (which flows north from West VA to PA), then to Pittsburgh to the Ohio River (the Ohio River starts where the Monongahela and the Allegheny River converge), then down the Ohio to the Green River. The overland route was via the "Wilderness Road" through the Shenandoah Valley, then over and thru the mountains (near the Tennessee line), then northwest into the heart of Kentucky.
I have found a book first published about 1800 that gave advice for pioneers traveling down the Ohio River. I'll be posting some of that book in the near future.
