12 Photos - Number 1

I was given a calendar published by the Beaver Dam Deposit Bank in 1990 to commemorate its' 100th Anniversary.  The Bank was first chartered February 25, 1890.  These historical photos are local photos made in the 1900 - 1910 era.  I will post them one at at time until all 12 are published.

From January:

CORINNA L. MORTON

CORINNA L. MORTON

Daughter of Isaac Morton (1787 – aft 1870), a merchant, and Sarah “Sally” H. Shanks (1803 – 1869).   Corinna  was born about 1824, Ohio County, KY. Corinna died 10 Apr 1902 in Mount Vernon, Illinois and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Mount Vernon.

On 7 Jan 1845 Corinna married Dr. Willis Duff Green, who was born in the 1821 near Danville, Kentucky.  Dr. Green and Corinna lived in Mount Vernon, Illinois, where he practiced medicine and was prominent in business, including part ownership of the first railroad into Mount Vernon.  Dr. Green and Corinna had ten children: Alfred M., an attorney in Gainesville, Texas; Inez I., an instructor in Southern Illinois Normal University; Laura Reed; Minnie; William H., a Judge of the Circuit Court of Illinois; Earl, a physician in Mount Vernon; Duff, Cora Lee; Maidelyn F.; and Lucille.

Source: A History of Southern Illinois, by George Washington Smith, Vol. III, page 1352, published 1912.

I suspect Corinna’s death was caused by cholera because one of her adult children, Cora Lee Green, died a few days after Corinna.

Dr. Green, Corinna’s husband, died in September 1904.

George William Leach

This article is about George William Leach, born 19 Jun 1841 in the Cromwell area, the son of John A. Leach and Nancy Borah; G. W. died 12 Jan 1918 and is buried on a hill on Gentry land at the end of Old Cromwell Road in Prentiss.  The party described in the article was to celebrate his 76th birthday, June 19, 1917, a few months before he died.

          G. W. served in the Civil War with the Union forces, the 17th Kentucky Infantry, participating in the Battle of Shiloh; Sherman’s “March to Atlanta” followed by General Thomas’ march from Atlanta to Nashville.

          G. W.’s first wife was Josephine Belle, who died in 1889 at age 40.  Seven children were born of that marriage: Vurlura, Emmett, Clyde W., John Vernon, Orville K., Gamalia Shalto, and Otis.

The Hartford Herald, 19 March 1890 "George W. Leach living near Green River below Prentice, lost three children last week, all of measles and the effects of the relapse of measles. We can but feel a deep sympathy for Mr. Leach in his deep afflictions, made more distressing on account of his lonely condition, having been bereft of his wife a few months ago."

          G. W. next married Susan Ann Mefford (Sherrod), on 23 May 1892; Susan was the daughter of daughter of Andrew Jackson Mefford and Pelitha A. Mefford; Susan lived until 30 Dec 1956.  Two children were born of that marriage:  Peletha Mae and Argle Wilbur.

CLIVE M. SWAIN

 CLIVE M. SWAIN

Clive Milrey “Pete” Swain was born 23 Sep 1876 in Prentiss, Ohio County, the son of Percipial Arthur Swain and Wilemina Elmira Anglea.  Pete was one of six children: his siblings were Effie T. Swain Taylor (1879-1975); Royd Swain (1881-1969); Premley E. Swain (1883-1884); Archie B. Swain (1885-1959); and Robert I. Swain (1889-1978).

Pete and Mittie Gentry obtained a marriage license 21 Nov 1899 and were married two days later.

Pete and Mittie had two children, and infant that died at birth in 1913 and Willie Pearl Swain (Ayer) (1915-1999).

Pete registered for the draft (WWI) 12 Sep 1918.

Pete’s father, known as Uncle Sip, was very active in raising and racing horses, and several of Pete’s close relatives were in the blacksmith business. His WWI Draft registration listed his occupation as a blacksmith. In 1919 Pete purchased part interest in a shoe and leather repair business located in Hartford.  The 1910 and 1920 census shows him living in Centertown, near some of his relatives, and lists his occupation as a blacksmith. Pete and a relative, J. B. Swain, owned a blacksmith shop in Centertown known as Swain & Swain. This business was closed in January 1921 after J. B. Swain died. Shortly thereafter, Pete was in the automobile repair & servicing business in Centertown (might have been a gas station).

Pete died in Colorado 30 March 1922. He had moved to Colorado in an effort to recover from tuberculosis.

Pete had a Will that was signed 27 March 1922, about a week before he died.  Although he died in Colorado his estate was probated in Ohio County.
