Memorial Day

MEMORIAL DAY

If you have an ancestor that served in the US military, there are some military records available online, for free, and in some cases you can request additional records from the National Archives.  There is a fee for some records. Some records are "Discharge Papers" - these are generally called a document called a DD-214. Here is a link to start your search:  https://www.archives.gov/veterans/replace-medals.html

I found a list of  WWII Prisoners of War and that can be searched by state and by name, but not by county or city.  I searched for Kentucky, using the code 52 for Kentucky, and found 1,444 records, but I am unable to determine which ones are from Ohio County.  I found a familiar name, Casebier, which might be one of ours, and here is that record:

So, if you think one of your ancestors was a Prisoner of War during WWI, you can easily search these records (using a name, which I did not do) by using this link: https://aad.archives.gov/aad/series-description.jsp?s=644&cat=WR26&bc=,sl

There is a different database for Japanese POW's: https://aad.archives.gov/aad/series-description.jsp?s=623&cat=WR26&bc=,sl

Enlistment Records - WWII:  This database allowed me to search by State and County. I found an online list of 1,047 men and women from Ohio County that enlisted in the Army (this probably doesn't include the Navy or Marines) and I will post those names; there is a note on this site that warns that this list probably doesn't include all WWII Army enlistees. There are so many names I will split this up into several postings, but here are the first 100 names from the list (sadly, they are not in alphabetical order):

If you find an ancestor in the list, you can view his or her record.  Here is the starting point: https://aad.archives.gov/aad/display-partial-records.jsp?dt=893&sc=24994%2C24995%2C24996%2C24998%2C24997%2C24993%2C24981%2C24983&cat=PL37&tf=F&bc=%2Csl%2Cfd&q=&as_alq=&as_anq=&as_epq=&as_woq=&nfo_24994=V%2C8%2C1900&op_24994=0&txt_24994=&nfo_24995=V%2C24%2C1900&op_24995=0&txt_24995=&nfo_24996=V%2C2%2C1900&cl_24996=52&nfo_24998=V%2C3%2C1900&cl_24998=183&nfo_24997=V%2C4%2C1900&cl_24997=&nfo_24993=V%2C2%2C1900&op_24993=0&txt_24993=&nfo_24981=V%2C1%2C1900&cl_24981=&nfo_24983=V%2C2%2C1900&op_24983=0&txt_24983=&mtch=1047&pg=1
