The First Kentucky Brigade, Confederate States of America, was formed in September 1861 at Camp Boones, near the Tennessee border and served under Generals Buckner and Breckinridge.  The First Kentucky Brigade participated in the following battles: Shiloh, Baton Rouge, Hartsville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Mission Ridge.  Approximately 5,000 men volunteered to serve with The First Kentucky Brigade, primarily from Kentucky, but also from Texas, Virginia, Indiana and other states; at the end of the war there was less than 1,500 remaining. Following the surrender by General Lee, the survivors started for home May 6, 1865.

Several men from Hartford, or near Hartford, served with The First Kentucky Brigade. I doubt if the following is a complete list, but these names were taken from the above-referenced book:

1918 School Districts

School districts for Ohio County are a bit of a mystery.  Helen Keown found the 1918 districts published in the local paper.  It would be fun if we can find more of these.

It appears that most of the schools shown are "ungraded schools" and we can assume these were the typical one-room schools where all "grades" met together.  It looks like in 1918 there were 106 "ungraded schools" in the county; these include some small communities that I have never heard of, for example, New Oklahoma, Tanglewood, and Sarvis Hill. Note that the "Graded Schools" are located in the six largest towns.
